NYC Celebrates Dumplings

Dumpling enthusiasts partied at the annual Tang’s Natural NYC Dumpling Festival this past Saturday to sample some of New York’s best dumplings. Celebrating the diversity of these mini bundles of deliciousness, onlookers could try everything from potstickers and gyoza, to empanadas and Jamaican beef patties.

A $20 ticket got you four tastings at booths like Red Egg, H-Mart, Chef One, Tang’s, and Red Castle Bakeries. My personal favorites were the mini pork buns and pork, taro, and cilantro dumplings from Reg Egg, and the chicken and napa potstickers from Chef One.

I stuck around for the first round of the dumpling eating contest, and witnessed last year’s champion David Brunelli eat 72 dumplings in two minutes (just shy of his 74 dumplings in 2012). The first place prize for the dumpling eating contest gets $2000! Proceeds from the festival go to the Food Bank for New York City.
